Read the lease before cleaning
Your lease and move-in condition report define the standard for the final walkthrough. Review them before buying supplies, note any required carpet or appliance cleaning, and photograph pre-existing damage separately from ordinary dirt.
Empty first, then clean
Cleaning around boxes creates missed edges and extra work. Remove belongings, patch only what the lease allows, and clean from the farthest room toward the exit. Start with closets and high surfaces before moving to kitchens, bathrooms, and floors.
Give kitchens and bathrooms extra time
Degrease the range and hood, wipe appliance interiors, clear crumbs from drawers, remove cabinet residue, and clean behind movable appliances when safe. In bathrooms, address soap film, mirrors, fixtures, grout surfaces, and toilet bases.
Finish for the walkthrough
Vacuum edges, damp-mop appropriate hard floors, remove trash, and check every lighted room from the doorway. Save dated photos of the cleaned space and return keys using the process documented by your property manager.
Frequently asked questions
Should an apartment be empty before move-out cleaning?
Yes. An empty property allows cleaners to reach closets, edges, floors, and appliance areas efficiently.
Does cleaning guarantee a full security deposit?
No. Deposit decisions may also include damage, unpaid charges, and lease-specific requirements.
